reasons to live one more, the next, and another day

“If I can stop one heart from breaking”

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one Life the Aching,
Or cool one in Pain,

Or help one fainting Robin
Unto his Nest again,
I shall not live in Vain.

—Emily Dickinson.

the best convictions are those that seek to benefit the self the least—they also the ones that shine the strongest in life’s most extraordinary circumstances.

One Empathizes

After great pain, a formal feeling comes–
The Nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs;
The stiff Heart questions was it He, that bore,
And Yesterday, or Centuries before?

The Feet, mechanical, go round–
A Wooden way
Of Ground, or Air, or Ought,
Regardless grown,
A Quartz contentment, like a stone–

This is the Hour of Lead–
Remembered, if outlived,
As Freezing persons recollect the Snow–
First–Chill–then Stupor, then the letting go.
